MORGAN PARK — Community partners will celebrate the unveiling of artwork and the restoration of over half a mile of the Major Taylor Trail Saturday in Morgan Park.
Trust for Public Land, Major Taylor Trail Keepers and Friends of the Major Taylor Trail will hold a ribbon-cutting and celebration 11 a.m. Saturday along the Major Taylor Trail near 111th and Aberdeen streets.
The event will celebrate the installation of “Holding Space,” a public art structure by artist Nnenna Okore. The canopy-like steel structure incorporates vibrant patterns inspired by Ankara fabric and Okore’s home country of Nigeria. It is designed to create a welcoming place for neighbors to gather along the popular biking trail, officials said.
The celebration also marks the completion of a half-mile natural area restoration project by the Park District along the trail from 111th to 115th streets. Invasive and weedy vegetation along the trail was replaced with healthier native plantings that will improve the ecological health of the trail.
