Quarter to Five is an exemplary “transitional” work for Jarrell, beginning to scratch at the visual language of AFRICOBRA prior to the group’s actual founding. Like other transitional works like Cock Fight, Sign of the Times, and Portrait of Jae, Jarrell begins to integrate purely abstract gestures into his image making. Sweeping whorls of vibrant color flow through the compositions, standing at strong contrast with blocks of translucent white paint which end up serving as a middleground for the push-and-pull of tones. The subject matter of the piece however feels more rooted in Jarrell’s early work, which often visited the iconic jazz and blues bars of Chicago’s South Side.
