"My mother had a superstition of always saying "little white rabbit" three times on the first day of every month as soon as she woke up. It was a wish for good luck to come to her. There were many old wives' tales and black folk traditions in my family growing up. It is her legacy to me - all of them little reminders meant to bring the good and avert the bad. I wish it were that easy," said Philemona Williamson in discussion of "On the First."
