From the transition point between "mid-career" and "late-career" works, Jazz at Massey Hall brings together a mix of lessons from the previous forty years of making and harmonizes them into a cohesive whole. Meticulously worked and featuring a variety of painting techniques, Jazz at Massey Hall depicts “the Quintet” a jazz group composed of five leading "modern" players of the day: Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. The title refers to an album of that name, recorded live in 1953.
Featuring woodworking, collage, assemblage, impasto painting techniques, stains, and highly detailed hand-painted patterning, Jazz at Massey Hall sets the tone for much of Jarrell’s late-career work in the 2000s.
