GORDON PARKS (1912-2006)
Portrait of Alberto Giacometti. 1951; printed 1990s. Silver print, the image measuring 10x11¾ inches (25.4x29.8 cm.), the sheet 11x14 inches (27.9x35.6 cm.), with Parks' signature and date 1997 in ink on verso. Apparently Parks selectively bleached and toned this print to emphasize the drama of the sculptor sitting amidst his work. Provenance Gifted by Parks to a friend in 1997; to the Present Owner
Estimate: $5,000-7,500
CONDITION:
Gordon Parks' portrait of Alberto Giacometti is in very good condition.
The print was gifted to a friend of the owner, who was then working on a Parks book. It has been owned by the same collector for 25 years and has shown consistency in tone throughout this period. At the time of acquisition, the client understood that the image was bleached and selectively toned in order to emphasize the drama of the composition.
The "bleached" areas appear to be the light halos around Giacometti and the large hand. These brilliant highlights augment and intensify the image. The possible "toning" appears largely in the lower right quadrant, but close inspection shows other fainter areas of this tonal quality (please see accompanying images). We have been unable to verify this, but certainly the textural qualities of the image and Giacometti's placement within his own work is both dramatic and effective.
Otherwise, the surface of the print is overall bright and clean. There are two tiny spec-sized accretions in the upper center edge, both of which are slightly tan, but these are quite small, and only visible with close and careful inspection, and not at all under typical viewing conditions.
The margins and verso are bright and clean. With Parks' signature and date 1997 in ink on verso.
Condition reports and additional images are provided as a courtesy and should be used by you to aid in the formation of your own opinion regarding condition. All material is sold subject to Swann's standard terms and conditions of sale as published in our catalogues and posted on our website, and include the following terms: (1) all property is sold "as-is"; and (2) works cannot be returned on the basis of condition.
