Demetrius Wilson (b.1996, Boston, MA) creates paintings that merge personal biography with collectively shared experiences, exploring both moments of stillness and activity. His work adapts dynamically, creating a sense of impermanence through colors that hint at stories of figures and landscapes yet to be revealed. Wilson's paintings navigate a process of displacement and examine the handling of time, not by blending past and present but by distorting them to challenge the viewer's perception. Abstraction guides his rambunctious mark-making and rich pigmentation, leading to vigorous, movement-filled works reminiscent of twentieth-century action painters. While he doesn't directly render figures, Wilson's rapid marks suggest animals, birds, humans, and other forms, negotiating pace and color with judicious tact. Surreal hues intertwine with earthly tones in his transient landscapes, foreshadowing fantastical realities where migration is infinite. Having experienced various homes and terrains, Wilson's art reflects the endless story of displacement, with the end of the world symbolizing another uncontrollable transition. His spontaneous language of abstraction parallels the precarious nature of eternity, remaining in the hands of fate.
