Flash’s Cross-Colour Series, utilizing a unique technique for developing the images on negative paper, challenges the traditional narratives of identity, the politics of skin pigmentation, and gender representation. Working with a 4×5 large format camera, Flash's twentieth-century portraiture style centers those frequently marginalized, engaging those who are frequently rendered invisible. Recently, Flash has expanded into digital photography, continuing to explore and push the boundaries of visual representation.
From the Artist:
These selections are a reflection of the late 80's and early 90's, a time when the AIDS crisis was at its highest in New York city. I was an activist and a member of ACT UP, as well as ART+ (an affinity group focusing on issues around brown people affected by AIDS).
Some of the images are from ACT UP demonstrations in New York and Washington, DC. Others are photographs, which speak to the sadness and loss of too many friends during that period, as well as the anger towards many of the institutions that silently watched us die.
