Come Saturday, explores everyday African American life and was inspired was inspired by the rooming house at Cottage Grove Avenue and 55 Street in Chicago that 1959, Wadsworth would pass everyday on his way to work. In this watercolor, Jarrell captures the essence of the people around him; the people in his neighborhood. Here, he depicts a group of people congregating on the front porch of the rooming house, seeking relief from the un-airconditioned house and socializing with friends. This type of gathering alludes to a typical scene in Black communities. By giving the viewer a snapshot into his neighborhood, Jarrell is celebrating Black life and empowering the working lifestyles of everyday African-Americans.
With subtle swatches of the typical AfriCOBRA "Cool Ade” colors present in the clothing worn by the figures in the watercolor, through Come Saturday, Jarrell is referencing African textiles to further express the vibrancy of Black culture.
