David C. Driskell (1931 Georgia - 2020 Washington D.C.), eminent artist, scholar and curator, was a leading authority on African American Art. In 1998, the University of Maryland founded The David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the African Diaspora. In 2000 he was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Clinton. Trained as a painter and art historian, Driskell worked principally in collage and mixed media. His paintings and prints have been featured in numerous exhibitions in galleries and museums. He has a traveling retrospective in 2021 at the High Museum, GA, The Philips Collection, DC, and The Portland Museum of Art, Maine. His works are in collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
