Nnenna Okore (b. 1975, Australia) creates abstract, richly textured wall sculptures with themes related to waste, carbon emission, and energy consumption. Inspired by nature, traditional women’s creative practices and driven by a passion for global conservation, Okore creates intricate sculptures using plant-based bioplastic. Her art, rich in texture and vibrant color, mirrors organic forms such as roots, veins, and flora familiar from her childhood in Nigeria. Through labor-intensive techniques like fraying, weaving, dyeing, and sewing, Okore transforms materials like cheesecloth and burlap into mesmerizing, visceral sculptural pieces. Her work beckons viewers to immerse themselves in her creative process with bioplastic materials, fostering learning, creative exchange, and ecological awareness. Through this dialogue, Okore strives to aestheticize the issue of climate change, while actively contributing to its solution.
