Jenkins Johnson Gallery is excited to premier 6 new works by Cameron Welch as part of our group exhibition, Figurative Summer!

Welch’s mosaics reference Black identity, modern society and mythology through the use of collaging found objects including CDs, brooms, mirrors, with traditional mosaic techniques. For Welch, collecting and using readymades allows him to bring stories that already exist in the world into the narratives and questions he poses in his own work. It also permits Welch to use these objects as a way to convey nostalgia. For instance, CDs are now considered an item of the past. Welch includes items like this to evoke stories and memories within his audience. Developing new myths and stories through his mosaic paintings is about creating new possibilities. Welch's paintings propose the idea of getting rid of boundaries and stereotypes.

Welch has been the recipient of several awards including the Inaugural One River School Emerging Art Award, and Columbia University Scholarship of Merit. He was nominated for the Rema Hort Mann Emerging Artist Grant in 2016. He was recently included in Antwaun Sargent’s "Then & Now", along with Chase Hall at Jenkins Johnson Projects. Welch’s work has been featured in such publications as Vice, Hyperallergic, Hypebeast, and Forbes. Welch has an MFA from Columbia University, and a BFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
